My Contest Results

I have retired from the contest circuit.

Here are my contest results (from late 2008 through late 2011):

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ First Place, 2008 Wallflower Contest, All Author Division: Contemporary. A published author took second place and a soon-to-be 2009 Golden Heart® winner took third place with the manuscript that would become the 2009 Golden Heart® winning entry.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Second Place, 2009 Golden Gateway Contest, Single Title Category.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Fourth Place, 2009 Wallflower Contest, The Rose Division (prior first place manuscript only contest). A published author took first place and a double 2009 Golden Heart® finalist took fifth place.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Fourth Place, 2009 Gotcha! Contest, Single Title/Mainstream Contemporary Category.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Second Place, The 2010 Sheila Contest, Women's Fiction with Romantic Elements Category.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Third Place, 2010 Golden Claddagh Contest, Contemporary Category.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Fourth Place, 2010 Golden Gateway Contest, Single Title Category.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Top 25%, 2010 Golden Heart® Contest, Novel with Strong Romantic Elements Category. Four judges gave this story a high score, but the fifth judge marked the entry "Wrong Category." I don't think any story can be "Wrong Category" for the broad "Novel with Strong Romantic Elements" Category. IMO, the judge mistook the broad "Novel with Strong Romantic Elements" Category of the Golden Heart® for the narrower "Women's Fiction with Romantic Elements" Category found in some RWA chapter contests.

ALIYA ARABESQUE ~ Finalist (Rounds One, Two, and Three), 2010 Writing with the Stars Contest (successor to American Title).

BENEATH THE VEIL ~ First Place, 2011 Golden Gateway Contest, Single Title Romance Category. FULL MANUSCRIPT REQUESTED BY NEW YORK EDITOR.

THE SHIVERING SANDS ~ Top 25%, 2012 Golden Heart® Contest, Contemporary Single Title Category. I'm pleased with this result, as this story doesn't fit neatly into the contemporary single title category. When you give Golden Heart® judges a great story, but when you give them a story outside of the box, three or four will reward you, but one or two will penalize you.

THE PLAYBOY’S FAKE FIANCÉE ~ First Place, 2010 Wallflower Contest, Scenes Division: Opening Hook Category. PARTIAL, THEN FULL, MANUSCRIPT REQUESTED BY NEW YORK EDITOR.

THE PLAYBOY’S FAKE FIANCÉE ~ Top 25%, 2012 Golden Heart® Contest, Contemporary Series Romance Category. Four of five judges gave this story a perfect or near perfect score, but the fifth judge didn't. Three-tenths of one point prevented the triggering of RWA's standard deviation scoring. If the fifth judge had given a score three-tenths of one point lower, RWA would've dropped that score and replaced it with an average of all five scores, which would have brought the fifth score close to the scores of the other four judges.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Second Place, 2009 Golden Gateway Contest, Romantic Novella Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Third Place, 2009 Wallflower Contest, Scenes Division: Best Scene Category. A published author took first place and a soon-to-be 2010 Golden Heart® finalist took second place with the manuscript that would become a 2010 Golden Heart® winner.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Third Place, 2010 Linda Howard Award of Excellence Contest, Romantic Sensual and Sizzling Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Honorable Mention, 2010 Stroke of Midnight Contest, Historical Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Second Place, 2010 Romance Through the Ages Contest, Historical Romance Category. FULL REQUESTED BY EDITOR. A 2010 Golden Heart® winner took first place.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Fifth Place (out of six), 2010 Romance Through the Ages Contest, The Legend Category (most memorable hero).
I hadn't noticed The Legend Category when I entered The Loving of Lord Loxley in the Historical Category of this contest. I'm delighted that the judges thought my Lord Loxley was a memorable hero, but I wasn't surprised by the fifth place finish, as Lord Loxley had no POV in the first 35 pages at the time.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Fifth Place, 2010 Golden Acorn Contest, Historical Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ First Place, 2010 Golden Gateway Contest, Historical Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Grand Prize Winner, 2010 Golden Gateway Contest (highest score out of all entries in all categories).

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Harlequin’s 2011 So You Think You Can Write Challenge.
EDITORIAL ENCOURAGEMENT TO FINISH FULL MANUSCRIPT AND SUBMIT TO EDITOR.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Honorable Mention, 2011 Stroke of Midnight Contest, Historical Category.

THE LOVING OF LORD LOXLEY ~ Third Place (out of six), 2011 Wallflower Contest, The Rose Division (prior first place manuscript only category).
